The Donegal panel who opened the Allianz NHL Division 2B last week against London
Like his colleagues, sheer relief was the main emotion of Donegal’s experienced wing back Sean McVeigh.
On a day when his team could quite easily have come away with nothing against a youthful and spirited Sligo side in Markievicz Park, McVeigh was content with a 1-19 to 2-14 win.
Like the Donegal footballers a fortnight ago, the hurlers were pinned in their own half as both sides were reduced to 14 men for the final ten minutes.
Donegal’s greater experience stood to them in those final frenetic moments.
“It looked like were cruising there for a while in the second half and Sligo were down to 14 men and we should have closed it out,” McVeigh said.
“Immense credit to Sligo as they really came at us and had us under real pressure towards the end.
“We took our foot off the gas and started doing things we should not have been doing like to trying to work the ball out of the defence in those conditions and I suppose we were our own worst enemy.
“I thought the lads showed a lot of character to dig out the win and get those precious two points going up the road.
“These two games were ones that we targeted to win and it is good to get that fine start”.
Gerard O’Kelly-Lynch netted a goal in the first minute, but Ronan McDermott’s goal got Donegal motoring.
McVeigh said: “Sligo are very fit and very strong and finished very well, but we knew coming down here that it was going to be a massive battle.
“They have been playing Christy Ring hurling for the past few years and gave Offaly a great game here so we have full respect for their capabilities.
“We started very well in the third quarter, but we were not able to finish it out and maybe us experienced boys made a few mistakes as well.
“It was all about getting two points and we played very well in the first half but the tempo dropped in the second half”.
Next up is a long trip to Wicklow who lost heavily to Derry, while Sligo take on London.
