Versatile Dunleavy content to play whatever role needed for Donegal U-20s

Glenswilly's Kealan Dunleavy

Kealan Dunleavy scored Donegal’s two goals in the 2-10 to 1-4 win over Mayo in the U-20 Development League on Saturday, which played a huge part in Gary Duffy’s team making it to the final this weekend.

The Glenswilly player pounced for the first in the early minutes of the second quarter and just minutes after Conor Reid drove through the heart of the defence to give Mayo an early goal.

And he struck for the second ten minutes from the end just after Tom O’Flaherty had pointed Mayo’s first score of the second half to cut Donegal’s lead to six points.

“It was good to get the goals,” Dunleavy said afterwards. “For the first Luke McGlynn had a shot blocked and I think Bobby McGettigan got a touch on it before I hit it first time.

“It was an important score because they had just scored their goal. It seemed to rattle them and for the second goal Jack Gallagher came through the middle and I didn't know what he was going to do with it. But he laid it off and I finished it. It is always good to get to finals and hopefully we can now push on and win it.”

Dunleavy proved his versatility once again on Saturday. After being at half-forward seven days before in the 2-9 to 0-11 win in Roscommon and half-back against Derry beforehand in a 3-14 to 0-6 success in the opening game, he was handed a new role again against the Westerners.

“I was in midfield today and I’m happy to be playing anywhere as long as I’m on the team,” he said. “Most of the players can play in a number of positions. Players in the full-forward line can play in the half-forward line and Bobby McGettigan, for example, can play in the middle of the field which is good to have versatility in the team.”
