“Pull like a Dog”...the infamous words by Olympian Silver Medalists, O’ Donovan Brothers, Gary and Paul were roared out by all counties over the weekend, at the All Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships 2016, held at the Ballyshannon Lakeside Centre, hosted by Donegal Bay Rowing Club.
2700 Rowers descended on Ballyshannon, Ireland’s oldest town for the annual All Ireland Coastal Championships. Set against Donegal’s Wild Atlantic Way, the rowing course and conditions didn’t disappoint , the 500 strong crews rowers who travelled from Mayo, Kerry, Cork, Dublin, Wexford, Wicklow, Antrim, Belfast and Donegal each competing for those coveted medals and trophies.
Reaction to the venue and the level or organisation locally has been very positive and there are hopes that the event may make a return next year. A decision on next year’s venue will be announced in the next few days.
It was a family affair on the water as Workmen’s Rowing Club, Killarney U16/U18/21, Ladies crews Took Gold, with Trainer/cox Mikey Joe Burns and his Daughter Siobhan Burns in stroke.
The Arklow Rowing Club, Mixed Veteran crew took Gold, with a crew of 2 husband and wife teams, Susan Doyle and Peter Doyle, Claire and Tom Alexander, Susan and Claire are also sisters, Cox was Sandra Dunbar
Senior Men’s Race
It was Galley Flash, Clonakilty Senior Men who took Gold in the Senior Men’s Race, Fossa Rowing Club, Killarney took Gold in the Junior Men’s final.
Intermediate Mens was won by Vartry Rowing Club Co Wicklow. Senior Ladies was won by Myross Rowing Club, Co Cork. Passage West took gold for the Junior Ladies Race. Intermediate Ladies, Joint Gold was won a relatively new club Fenit Rowing Club, Co Kerry, and Whitegate Co Cork. Under 16, won by East Ferry, Co Cork, Portmagee Gold U14.Workmen’s Rowing club, Killarney took Gold in the Girls U14, Ladies U21 and Ladies U18. Pre vet Men went to Blackrock Co Dublin, Under 14 boys, Courtmacsherry Rowing Club, Co Cork, U12 boys Rosscarbery, U21 Men Whitegate Rowing Club, Senior Mixed Cairdhu Rowing Club, Co Antrim
Veteran Ladies Gold went to Sneem Rowing Club, Veteran Men, Myross Rowing Club, Gold, Master Men’s Gold went to Templenoe Rowing Club, Co Kerry, and Master Women’s went to Rushbrooke, Co Cork.
Magical weekend
Speaking about the event ICRF PRO Mary B Teahan commented “it was a magical weekend held for the first time in Co Donegal.The organisers hosted one of the best weekend’s coastal Rowing championships ever. The conditions, venue, organisation, level of volunteers and Donegal good will and banter was just incredible. The quality and standard of racing was extremely high, speed and efficiency was the order of the day, for any crew to make it to the final was a huge honour.”
Decisions on next year’s venue will be announced in the next few days.
