Conal Shovlin, Chairman of Loughderryduff Wind Farm hands a sponsorship cheque to Roslaeen Doherty, Treasurer, and Martin Breslin, Chairman, of the Playground Committee.
Glenties Playground, which was set to close due to financial pressures, will remain open, thanks to the generosity of a local company.
In September, the Donegal Democrat highlighted the plight of the playground committee, when the insurance bill for the popular facility doubled without notice.
As chairman Martin Breslin pointed out at the time, there was no way that the small voluntary, community group could come up with an extra €600 at short notice.
"The playground is in constant use, with The Rock housing estate behind it and a national school and playgroup on either side of it," he explained.
"But the reality is that we may have to close the playground if we can't afford the insurance."
This week, Martin contacted the Democrat to tell us that, thanks to the generosity of a local business, the playground has been given a lifeline. Conal Shovlin, of Loughderryduff Wind Farm, has kindly agreed to sponsor the entire cost of this year's insurance.
FORTUNATE AND DELIGHTED
Martin said the playground committee are “fortunate and delighted” to have received this funding. He thanked the company for their support.
He also thanked the Donegal Democrat for highlighting the concerns of the local community regarding the future of the playground last September. Our story at the time elicited a huge response from the public.
