Dakota Nic Mheanman, Deputy Pearse Doherty and Chris MacManus hear from locals about the problem
Around forty houses in the Brockagh/Glenfin area have no access to running mains water – and a local election candidate says the issue 'is simply not good enough'.
Dakota Nic Mheanman, a Sinn Féin candidate in the Lifford-Stranorlar local electoral area, visited the area recently.
Nic Mheanman was in the area with Deputy Pearse Doherty and Chris MacManus MEP at the weekend.
“There are 40 houses in the Brockagh area that have no access to running mains water,” Nic Mheanman said.
“It is simply not good enough for people living in this area that they do not have access to such a fundamental right as running water.
“It is not acceptable in this day and age and at a time when the government have such a surplus.”
Nic Mheanman says she will raise the issue and national level and Sinn Féin have been told by Uisce Éireann that they have replaced a number of valves which has helped some households.
There is also water pressure testing going on at the minute.
She added: “Uisce Éireann have also told us just a few weeks ago that they are looking at other options which may include additional pumps.
“We as a team will continue to work on this for the people of this area and try to get government to make sure the investment is put into this community so as people have basic rights such as access to running water.”
MEP MacManus said: “I have a track record of supporting initiatives that will improve access to good quality drinking water for citizens in Ireland and across the EU.
“If re-elected, I want to work with Dakota as your Councillor to see if we can raise this with the European commission under the drinking water directive which is there to ensure access to good quality water.”
