John Kelly endured a difficult day at the European Throwing Cup on Sunday.
The Finn Valley AC shot put man threw out to a best of 18.64m in Leiria, Portugal.
Kelly recorded the 18.64m throw on his first visit to the circle. The St Johnston man fouled on each of his subsequent five attempts.
Kelly's Irish colleague Eric Favors set a new national record when finishing fifth.
Favors and Kelly have enjoyed quite the joust over the last couple of years. Favors, who represents Raheny Shamrocks, threw out to 20.66m, hoisting his own Irish record.
Roman Kokoshko of Ukraine won with a 21.52m effort.
Last month, Kelly won a silver at the Irish Indoor Championships having competed at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon in 2022.
Meanwhile, Noeleen Scanlan of Letterkenny AC withdrew from the weekend's UK Inter-Counties Cross Country. Scanlan had been the only Donegal athlete selected to compete at Loughborough.
