Lauren Callaghan jumps for gold at AAI Games

Lauren Callaghan went over 6m four times on Saturday to win the women’s long jump at the AAI Games in Dublin.

The Killygordon woman leapt to a best of 6.07m to take victory at the National Indoor Arena.

Finn Valley AC athlete Callaghan, a student at DCU, also touched the sand three times at 6.02m.

Callaghan’s 6.07m jump beat off competition from Sophie Meredith of St Mary’s in Limerick, who jumped to 6.04m.

Flanagan lowered the Donegal indoor one mile record in Albuquerque while in Boston her Finn Valley AC colleague Ó Gailín ran a sub four-minute mile

Last year, Callaghan set a new Donegal indoor record of 6.24 and marked a new IUAA Indoor long jump record of 6.19m.

Having recently started off her season with a 5.90m effort in Loughborough, Callaghan was at winning ways on Saturday.

In the same event, Fodhla Nic Phaidin of Rosses was sixth with a 4.90m attempt.

Geraldine Stewart of Tir Chonaill AC was fourth in the women’s shot, reaching out to a best of 11.28m.

On Thursday night at the Track and Field Live event at TUS Arena in Athlone, Finn Valley AC sprinter Janine Boyle won two 200m races, crossing the line in 7.83 seconds and 7.91 seconds.

Each time, Boyle outgunned Rhianna McCarthy of UCD AC.

McFadden was second in the long jump event in Athlone, going out to 5.05m and beat by Ennis’s Grainne Kennedy (5.06m).
