Donegal boxers lose out in Irish finals

Muireann Bradley and Pearse McBride lost out in finals on Sunday.

Donegal boxers Muireann Bradley and Pearse McBride lost in finals of the Junior 1 Championships at the National Stadium on Sunday.

Letterkenny Boxing Club’s Bradley lost out in the 54kgs final to Niamh Keogh from Limerick. Keogh took a unanimous decision in her bout with Bradley.

On Saturday, Bradley defeated Olivia O’Neill from Crumlin in her semi-final having got the better of Tipperary’s Emily Mullins in Friday’s quarter-final.

McBride was beaten by Marcus Barrett of Titans in the 60kgs final with Barrett claiming a unanimous decision.

McBride had beaten Tiernan Hale (Star, Antrim) in a narrow 3-2 split decision in Saturday’s semi.

St Bridget’s Clonmany duo Conan McGonigle and Cahir Donaghy lost out in the semis. McGonigle was beaten by Scott Thompson (Spartans, Antrim) at 42kgs and Donaghy was bested by Alfie Jordan (Olympic, Limerick) in a 44kgs semi.

Twin Towns BC woman Lani Lafferty was on the wrong end of a 4-1 split decision against Breanna Johnston (Tredagh) in a 66kgs semi.

There was no joy for Carndonagh pair Josh Clarke and Oisin Doherty in quarter-finals on Friday night. At 50kgs, Clarke lost out to Avona’s Martin McDonagh while Luke Fitzgerald (Corpus Christi) stopped Doherty in the third round of their 63kgs clash.

Twin Towns’ Joey O’Hara lost out on a 4-1 split to Neilstown’s Martin Lawrence at 80kgs and Ballybofey man Sean Devenney, boxing for the Derry-based Oakleaf ABC, lost out to Shane Quinn (St Paul’s, Antrim) in a 57kgs quarter-final.
