Another busy week of golfing action

Another busy week of golfing action

On a weekend when Shane Lowry's hopes of winning the US Open ended in deep disappointment, there was plenty of activity on Donegal's golf courses.

A host of clubs are hosting Captains and Presidents Prizes while the inter-club competitions continue to serve up some wonderful golf.

Here's a round up from the county's clubs:

Sunday in Murvagh, though not quite as difficult as Oakmount, was certainly a challenge and the North-West Alarms event produced some exceptional results in the conditions. The Dustin Johnston of the day was Shaun Meehan with 38pts, Sean Boyle produced a fine round also with 38pts. Darren Rafferty with 34pts sneaked in ahead of Golfer of the Year leader, Rory Lenihan on 33pts and Micky D Gallagher made the best of the day to earn himself the gross.

Mr Gerry Forde hosts his Captain's Day next Sunday and a number of people are quietly building up to the challenge of this prestigious event. Stableford competition off the white tees. Will Denis Kelly defend his title? Wishing you a great day and thanks for all your work during the year.

And on the subject of Captain’s Days, congratulations to John Gartland on his recent major victory of the Captain’s Prize in the Island Golf Club. Well done John.

The Four-Ball Matchplay Championship sponsored by TG Tunnelling Ltd has reached the final stages and we are left with some of the best match-players in the club fighting it out for the title. Eamon Canney & Liam Cassidy take on the might of Bobby O'Shea & Liam Farren in the final while on the other side of the draw, Joe Gillespie & Hugh Cassidy defeated John Hanna & Victor Bradley in the final of the plate.

The Draw Sheet for Singles Matchplay sponsored by Derryeagh Crystal is now up in Locker Room, together with dates for matches.

Some very tasty matches in prospect! Aidan Faulkner, last year's winner, is not going to relinquish the title easily and meets Matt Gallagher in the first round. Will Matt’s experience of the big stage stand him in good stead? Tom Geraghty plays Damien Mulhern and Conor McGoldrick plays Shaun Meehan, a junior shoot-out. Declan Murrin v Eddie McGarrigle and Frank O’Donnell v Bryan Crawford should produce some fireworks also. Who will prevail?

On the team front, Gerry Forde’s Donegal League team of Jason Conway & Tom Geraghty, Padraig Farragher & Chris Hegarty, Seamus Faulkner & Bryan Crawford, Eamon Canney & Mark Sweeney, Sean Diver & Damien Hanna, earned themselves a good result at home v Letterkenny on Saturday but you have to think we will need a couple of hot-shots to clinch the deal away in Letterkenny in a weeks time.

The Fred Daly team travel to Lisburn on Saturday in the first leg of their third round match, best of luck there, lads.

Junior Coaching continues on a Monday and Friday evening.

Letterkenny Hospitals Golf Society

The Society held its latest outing at Barnhill Golf Club in Letterkenny on Monday last. Played in ideal conditions and with the course in fine shape, it saw a welcome return to the winner's enclosure for former Irish International golfer Enda McMenamin. Enda produced a super round of 73, one over gross, which included three birdies and a score of 41 Stableford points. He just pipped Ciaran Williamson for victory, Ciaran returned a fine score of 40 points to take the runners-up spot, just ahead of Pauric McHugh on 39pts in third place. James Mc Fadden came in with 36pts to take 4th place overall. Section One; Shane Blake 34pts, Dessie Ferry 32pts bot, Mickey Ferry 32pts. Section Two; Michael Boucher-Hayes 36pts, Kevin Mills 34pts, Cynthia Furey 32pts. Section Three; Conal Mac aBhaird 33pts, Paddy Murray (Snr) 32pts, Jim Gallinagh 30pts. 1st Nine; Bridget Mc Clafferty 20pts. 2nd Nine; Anne Cannon. The Society's next outing will take place at Ballybofey & Stranorlar Golf Club on Friday, 22nd July.

Following on from a very successful opening weekend to the club’s Open Week, Wednesday 15th saw entries rise once again for the Evolve Menswear sponsored Open Stableford Parading a style of golf normally only viewed at television ‘majors’ was single handicapper Joe Coyle [7] who, with a birdie at the first, gave the Barnhill course inward nine a ‘dressing down’ with birdies at 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 15th & 17th for an overall 43pts win. Driving close behind was Ulster Cup stalwart Liam Wiseman [11] with 42pts.

In third place was a regular and always welcome visitor to Barnhill, Andy Boland [13] wh took the turn on 20pts, but 21pts on back nine wasn’t enough. Andy finishing with a very creditable 41pts to edge out Deron O’ Brien [15] on B.O.T.

Cat 4 prize on the day was won by the everpresent Hugo Daly with 39pts which included a birdie at 16th andGross went to Cian Harkin [6] with 31 gross points.

Friday 17th Open was sponsored by Brian Mc Cormick Sports and what a great win by the club’s Minor League team captain Bobby Mullally [19] who returned 21pts on each nine and no doubt with the help of that birdie at 17th, pipped runner-up Charlie Coughlan [12] by one point. Third and fourth places were taken by the 'PJ’s', with P.J. Doherty [22] taking third with 39pts and P.J. Sweeney taking fourth with 38pts. Cat 4 was won by Gerry Keeney [24] with 34pts whilst gross was won by Mr. Consistancy, Joe Coyle [5] with 33 gross points.

Saturday 18th hosted a 4Ball Betterball sponsored by 4 Lanterns, Letterkenny and, as the saying goes, ‘when the chips are down…’ Coming to the fore were Freddie Wilson & John Mc Caughan on 63; Mark Doherty & Paddy O’ Gorman on 64; [b.o.t.] Keith Shields & Fergal Callan on 64; Joe Coyle & Eamonn McDermott taking gross on 72.

Sunday 19th finished the most successful Open Week to date but unfortunately also ended the great spell of sunshine but did little to deter golfers from entering one of our mainstay sponsors’ competitions, the Global Tiles & Bathrooms Open Stroke.

Indeed, it was a day of celebrations for the Cat 4 brigade with Richard Spratt [26]taking top prize with a net 63, [89 gross] with the help of a birdie at 5th relegating Mark Bradley [17] to runner-up spot on B.O.T. Mark had a gross 80 shots and a 63 nett. In third place was Conor Coady [22] who recorded an 82 gross, 66 nett. In fourth position was Damien Redmond [26] on 67 nett and 1st gross prize was collected by Brendan Mc Grath [4] with net 72 on B.O.T. with Con Boyce [4] also net 72.

What fantastic scoring over the Open Week but special mention must be made of one entrant and, as they say, ‘there’s no show like a Joe show’. Joe Coyle, winner of the Property Partners, Paul Reynolds & Co. Ltd sponsored ‘Golfer of the Week’, recorded no less than 31 birdies and one eagle. Congratulations Joe.

Another significant week of golf is taking place again this week at Barnhill which will culminate in the President’s Prize, Mr. Greg Sullivan, on Saturday.

On Monday evening it was the President’s Prize for Cat 4 and, with an entry of 28, taking this most coveted prize was last year’s cat 4 ‘golfer of the year’ Aiden O’ Neill with 30pts over 15 holes, relegating Alistair Boreland to second by virtue of B.O.T. whilst third place went to Michael Shiel on 29pts. President’s week continues with President's Prize to the Ladies on today, Thursday and tomorrow Friday with the Pre-President's Day Mixed Foursomes.

On Sunday 26th the club will host the Glencairn Hotel, Castleblaney, Open [P. Mc Fadden] and Wednesday next, 29th June, will see the Highland Motors Renault, Honda, Citroen, Dacia Open take place.

Team news: Wishing every success to the Kevin Kiely-led Seniors team who travel to Rosapenna GC on Friday intheir endeavor to retain this trophy and also to the Eamonn O’ Carroll-led Ulster Cup team who play Shandon Park GC at home on Sunday.

In the Lady President’s prize for men, it was Paul Smith who came out on top with 42 points with playing partner Andy Murray coming second on 39 points. John Chambers won the gross with 30 points while Paul Burton was third.

In the Wednesday open competition, Brian McGinley was first with 38 points with P Dunleavy in second.

In the Gent’s Single’s Stableford competition on Sunday, Mark Sullivan had a narrow victory over Cathal McMonagle on BOT, both players having 37 points.

The Donegal League team had a very close encounter in the first leg of their match against Rosapenna. Four of the five matches went to the 18th hole but, unfortunately, we only managed to get half a point. The home leg will be played this Sunday afternoon. Good luck to all the lads.

Cruit Island

Sun shine and perfect conditions on Saturday and rain and strong wind on Sunday saw how different two days at Cruit Island can be.
