Lettermacaward Health Centre's continued closure is 'simply not acceptable'

The facility was closed two years ago over concerns that the building was not fit for purpose

A call has been made to reopen the Lettermacaward Health Centre.

The facility was closed two years ago over concerns that the building was not fit for purpose. Patients who attended the centre were asked to attend the primary care centre in Glenties following the closure “until such time as a decision is taken regarding the future availability of the Lettermacaward.”

Since then, work has been completed but the centre has yet to open and Donegal TD and Sinn Fein Spokesperson on Finance, Deputy Pearse Doherty, has queried as to why.

“At a meeting with the regional head of the HSE, I called for the Leitirmacaward GP surgery to be immediately reopened,” Doherty said. “The reopening of the facility should be treated as a matter of urgency by the HSE.

“The community of Leitirmacaward were reassured that this facility would be reopened when renovation work was being carried out. This work has now long been completed yet the centre remains closed. This is simply not acceptable. I have asked the HSE to provide me with a report as to when the centre will reopen.”
