A new sign for the Gaeltacht areas in Donegal was showcased for the first time at a meeting of the Glenties Municipal District, this week.
Independent Councillor Micheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easbuig said that he raised the issue about Gaeltacht signs four years ago at Donegal County Council level.
A member of Coiste na Gaeilge, he said he was very excited to showcase the new sign that is designed by the talented Póilín Nic Géidigh at the meeting on Tuesday. Irish language planners were also asked to contribute their views on the new signs.
Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig said the sign represents the sea, the fields, the mountains and the purple colouring on the sign represents heather. The three white lines in the crest of the wave represents three points or a goal in GAA terms creating a deep connection with the proud sporting tradition of the Gaeltacht areas.
The Cathaoirleach of the Glenties Municipal District, Sinn Féin Councillor Marie Therese Gallagher said it is important that the signs be erected saying that it ought to be discussed with the road and planning section of the council.
