Councillors discuss what can be done about quads at municipal meeting

The issue with quads and the destruction they do to coastal areas was discussed at a Glenties Municipal District area, on Tuesday.

Quads are a common sight on beaches throughout the county. Councillor Micheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easbuig said that quads had been on beaches, once again, beside Donegal Airport. He also pointed out that people were driving on the marram grass (múirineach).

The coastal officer for Donegal County Council, David Friel said that there have been issues with quads and urged anyone who saw a quad driver behaving in an irresponsible way to contact the relevant authorities.

Cathaoirleach of the Glenties Municipal District, Marie Therese Gallagher said that the issue with quads had been addressed before at a meeting by Councillor John Sheamais Ó Fearraigh. Cllr Ó Fearraigh had asked that perhaps an area could be ringfenced for the sport.

Independent Councillor Michael McClafferty said that while the idea was a positive one he had ascertained from his inquiries on the matter that the biggest issue was insurance.

Cllr Gallagher said that she had been aware of a venue that used a disclaimer for such purposes.
