A Donegal psychologist said he hoped RTÉ’s new documentary on the use of pornography in Ireland will start a discussion on attitudes toward porn.
Fergal Rooney, senior counselling psychologist at St. John of God Hospital, contributed to RTÉ’s two-part documentary, “We Need to Talk About Porn”, which began on Monday.
Dr. Rooney, originally from Letterkenny, is lead clinician with Psychological Services for Healthy Relationships and Sexuality, a service St. John of God Hospital initiated in 2013. Speaking to RTÉ 2FM’s Ryan Tubridy on Tuesday, Dr. Rooney said he found the documentary “quite shocking and disturbing”, saying the programme presented the reality of porn use in Ireland and the type of extreme content available.
“It presented that without any sugarcoating, and I think there’s a tendency when we’re discussing porn to present it as a benign type of issue in our society,” he said. “I think last night’s programme really took issue with that and said, ‘Love it or loathe it, this is not a benign product and it is having an impact.’”
The second part of “We Need to Talk About Porn” airs Jan. 12th, at 9.35pm on RTÉ 1.
