No snow on this file image of Errigal, but it's getting colder

It's getting cold out there and hailstones so heavy they set off at least one car alarm as dusk fell in a Donegal town car park underlines just how wintry it has become here and across the north west.

Nationally Met Éireann has warned of falling temperatures over the next few days after some sleet and snow showers earlier and they have issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain until 9pm tonight in Donegal, Mayo and Galway.

Wintry weather is affecting road conditions across the country, with snow showers forecast in some areas.

Wintry showers are expected tonight, these will be heaviest and most frequent in the west and north with isolated thunderstorms.

Temperatures will be 0C to 3C with frost and icy stretches.

The AA are advising road users to be ready for the drop in temperatures with widespread frost and ice likely.

Better news however for the weekend which is looking like it will be cold, but dry.
