Bollards erected at Buncrana Pier due to structural concerns
Donegal County Council has confirmed that precautionary safety measures have been introduced at Buncrana Pier following the identification of structural concerns along part of the seaward side.
In a statement issued to Inishowen councillors, the local authority said that a recent inspection by the Piers and Harbours Engineer found that the section of the pier extending south-westwards from the lighthouse, constructed using a beam-and-column design, has deteriorated over time. As a result, questions have been raised regarding the long-term structural integrity of this portion of the pier.
In response, the Council’s Piers and Harbours team has installed bollards near the lighthouse. These will be positioned at the point where the pier transitions from a solid structure to the beam-and-column section.
The Council confirmed that the bollards will restrict vehicular access only, while pedestrian access will remain fully open, ensuring that locals and visitors can continue to enjoy the popular amenity without interruption.
“The purpose of the bollards is to restrict vehicular access only, thereby reducing loadings on the affected section,” the statement said.
Officials also emphasised that the overall functionality of the pier will not be impacted. Slipway access and pier steps will remain fully operational, and access by sea will continue as normal. The summer ferry service is also expected to proceed as scheduled.
To better understand the condition of the structure, a specialist consultant will be appointed to carry out a comprehensive assessment. This will include both above-water and underwater inspections, aimed at identifying the full extent of any defects and determining what remedial works may be required.

Once this assessment is complete, the Council will decide on the appropriate course of action and move forward with necessary repairs or upgrades.
