People are being urged to participate in a public consultation on the Donegal Town to Ballybofey Greenway this coming week.

The project is currently in the initial Concept & Feasibility Stage, which involves the identification of a project study area and the key constraints and opportunities located within.

The Barnesmore Gap Greenway project aims to provide an attractive trail between the towns of Donegal Town and Ballybofey/Stranorlar to be used mainly for recreational purposes by pedestrians, cyclists and people with impaired mobility. It will also act as a valuable corridor safely connecting rural communities and neighbours.

The purpose of the upcoming public consultation is to inform the public of the project and to invite feedback on the current study area, the constraints identified and any other features or opportunities that the design team should consider.

An in-person public consultation will take place this Wednesday, February 22, in the Abbey Hotel in Donegal Town from 12 to 8pm. A second consultation will take place in Jackson’s of Ballybofey on Thursday, February 23, from 12 to 8pm.

The closing date for submissions is Friday, March 10.

Councillor Barry Sweeney says the project has great potential and its important people have their say.

He said: “I would like to see the greenway connected into other walks and existing infrastructure. There is great potential for developing it beyond a greenway and as a recreational corridor.”

He alluded to the steam and rail history in the area and praised the work the Railway Heritage Group adding that their input would be important in relation to the proposed greenway.

The Ballyshannon-based councillor said a lot of work has already been carried out in relation to the concept.
