Warm tributes of welcome were paid to an Inishowen councillor who was co-opted to fill a vacancy on the council, caused by the resignation of Fine Gael councillor John Ryan.
Ballyshannon Fine Gael councillor Barry O’Neill proposed the co-option of Mickey Doherty and fellow Fine Gael councillor Bernard McGuinness seconded.
Mr Doherty lost his seat in 2014. He said that he was glad to be back in council.
He thanked his fellow councillors for recommending him.
“My ambition is to work with all of you,” he said.
He then congratulated the County Council on their investment of various resources in the hugely successful staging of the Irish Open at Ballyliffin.
“As councillors we may have our disagreements but we can sort them out. Teamwork is the key," he said.
Fine Gael councillor Bernard McGuinness, Martin Farren, Labour, Jack Murray, Fine Gael, Ciaran Brogan, Fianna Fáil, Nicholas Crossan, Independent, Frank McBrearty, Independent, Council CEO Seamus Neilly and Cathaoirleach Seamus O’Domhnaill also extended words of the welcome to the returned councillor.
The Chairperson said Mickey Doherty always took his role very seriously and was able to cross- political boundaries to help people.
