Anger at removal of Letterkenny ATM

Businesses in one part of Letterkenny have hit out at the removal of ATM machine which they say was removed without any notice.

The AIB ATM was removed from its location at Dunnes Stores, Oldtown on Tuesday. The location of the machine has since been bricked up after initially being covered by a metal sheet.
Local businesses have hit out at the decision saying the ATM was a very important and convenient facility for residents and shoppers in the area.
They say it was widely used day and night and was frequently used by people attending the nearby NowDoc surgery.
Local shop owner Anthony Arthur said the decision to remove the ATM without prior notice shows a lack of respect by the bank to local people.
“It’s not good for local businesses but it’s not just about us,” he said. “It affects all people who have been using it for 15 years or more. It affects all local businesses and all local people living in the area,” he said.
Mr Arthur said he had contacted AIB about the removal of the ATM but he was still waiting for a response on Thursday.
Local butcher Paddy Gildea said the location of the ATM was very convenient for people with disabilities as they could drive right up to it and park.
It was also used by tourists at the nearby Station House Hotel, he said.
“When a coach full of tourists comes to the hotel, that's the first place they go. There are still a lot of people just using cash and it was very handy.”
He said he would be writing to the local AIB manager to establish why the ATM was removed.
